John Sutton founded John Sutton & Associates (JSA) in 1997 to provide research, marketing, and management consulting services to public radio stations and organizations. We've since expanded to provide ratings analysis to commercial radio stations and groups.
JSA's work focuses on the intersection of audience, expenses, and revenues from listeners and businesses.
John has been in radio since 1977. He was co-director of the CPB-funded Listener-Focused Fundraising project and director of PRI's Public Radio Underwriting Partnership. He was on the core team of developers for Strategic AudiGraphics from Audience Research Analysis and an associate to the Audience 98 project.
Prior to starting JSA, John was Research Director at NPR where he also founded NPR's On-Air Fundraising Partnership. His commerical broadcasting experience includes stints at WTOP in Washington, DC, KQV and WDVE in Pittsburgh, and an overnight country music DJ during the Urban Cowboy years.
Sonja Lee joined JSA in 2007. She helps stations produce successful on-air fund drives. She also helps stations train staff for on-air pitching and producing.
Sonja has worked with nearly two-dozen JSA client stations including from WQXR in New York, KPBS in San Diego, WMFE Orlando, and WOUB in Athens, Ohio. Prior to working for JSA, she was the Program Director at KBBI in Homer, Alaska.
Sonja got her start in public radio as a volunteer DJ at KFSK in Petersburg, Alaska when she wasn't listening to the station out at sea on her commercial fishing boat.
